I was in Old Navy the other day and was asked if I wanted to take my hanger home. Since I have my own hangers, I said no and then inquired about what they do with them. The sales clerk told me that they throw them away! That's right, not only do they not reuse them, they THROW THEM IN THE GARBAGE! Now, since Old Navy is actually part of the Gap Inc. brand, along with Banana Republic, it led me to do wonder if all three stores do the same thing, and surprise, surprise, they do! So, I did a few google searches and found out that there are over 3200 Gap Inc. stores world wide - that's a lot of hangers in our landfills. Ridiculous!
If you would like to tell Gap Inc. how ridiculous you think it is that they don't reuse (or at least recycle) their hangers, you can try the following:
- Call their global headquarters at 650-952-4400
- E-mail Banana Republic customer service at custserv@bananarepublic.com
- E-mail Gap customer service at custserv@gap.com
- E-mail Old Navy customer service at custserv@oldnavy.com
Good luck.
In an effort to not be completely negative, here's a good example of a company doing a good job:
ReplyDelete"[Target is] the only national retailer employing a Garment Hanger reuse program, which keeps millions of pounds of metal and plastic out of landfills. We send clothing to our stores already on hangers, each of which gets reused an average of four times or until it’s no longer functional. In 2007, this program prevented 434 million hangers from entering landfills. The program also reduces workload for our store teams, because they don’t have to put clothing on hangers. When hangers break, we recycle the plastic and metal for use in post-consumer goods, products like plastic flowerpots and other gardening supplies, for example. But, more often, at least 90 percent of hangers returned are reused."
Who knew?
BOYCOTT this store!!!!! BOYCOTT OLD NAVY
ReplyDeleteI was buying clothes for my daughter and the cashier (happened to be the manager) asked me if I wanted to keep the clothes hangers that the clothes were displayed with. Seeing the pile of hundreds of hangers behind the counter, from only one day, I asked her what they do with the hangers that the customers don't take. She said"We throw them in the garbage". I said,"You do not reuse them?" She said "No". I asked,"Do you recycle them?" She said "No, we are not authorized to do so." Since this episode, I have called the head office and through much being ignored, I have discovered that this is the policy for all the Old Navy stores, throughout North America. Can you imagine the MILLIONS of plastic coat hangers in our landfills, for our, wildlife, animals, children to inherit? This small planet belongs to all of us. Let's stop this nonsense!! It takes many individuals to speak out to make change. Let's see if we can win this battle! Please help!
Please SHARE this to all of your friends and post on your page. Let us make OLD NAVY reuse their discarded plastic clothes hangers!
Depending on where the store is located Old Navy throws out, donates, or recycles the hangers.
ReplyDeleteGap and Banana Republic do not receive any merchandise pre-hung and reuse hangers until they are broken.
That's good to know, thanks for pointing that out!
